What does the standard govern?

The German standard DIN 4150-3 is the de-facto reference in the Low Countries for assessing whether vibrations can damage structures. It defines guide values for peak particle velocity (PPV, in mm/s) measured at the foundation and on the top floor.

Distinction per building type

The standard applies lower guide values for sensitive and historic buildings than for robust industrial structures. The frequency of the vibration also matters: at lower frequencies, stricter limits apply.

  • Category 1: industrial and robust buildings (highest guide values)
  • Category 2: ordinary residential buildings
  • Category 3: sensitive and listed buildings (lowest guide values)

Relevance for monitoring

By measuring vibrations continuously and assessing them against DIN 4150 guide values, action can be taken before damage occurs. The standard does not replace a condition survey, however: the two together form the strongest case.
