Visual monitoring

Visual monitoring watches a structure using high-resolution cameras instead of individual prisms. With the TotaLite device we capture the site permanently and image-processing software automatically detects displacements, cracks and changes — across the entire field of view at once, with a visual archive as evidence.

What is visual monitoring?

In visual (or image-based) monitoring, a fixed camera continuously films or photographs the object to be monitored. Specialised software compares the successive images and detects, at sub-pixel level, the smallest shift of reference points or targets in the image.

The major advantage: a single camera monitors numerous points across the entire field of view at once, without a prism or sensor on every point.

Fugro's TotaLite system

For this we deploy TotaLite®, Fugro's optical sensing system for contactless deformation monitoring. A fixed, compact camera detects displacements with millimetre precision at distances of up to 100–160 metres and sends the images to the cloud platform.

The movement analysis is linked into the same overview as our other monitoring techniques, with the same thresholds and automatic alerts. Installation is simple, minimally invasive and energy-efficient.

Complementary to geodesy

Visual monitoring is a powerful complement to a total station or sensors: geodesy delivers absolute precision on fixed points, while the camera provides a broad visual overview and automatic crack detection.
