From risk analysis to reporting: the steps to a sound monitoring plan.
The six steps
A good monitoring plan starts long before the first measurement. We always follow the same structured approach:
- 1. Risk analysis — which structures are at risk, and why?
- 2. Measurement strategy — choice of technique(s): total station, GNSS, sensors, drone.
- 3. Measurement plan — location and number of monitoring and reference points, frequency.
- 4. Thresholds — attention, alarm and intervention levels, aligned with the engineer.
- 5. Zero measurement — careful reference measurement before works begin.
- 6. Follow-up & reporting — continuous monitoring, alerts and periodic reports.
Why a plan?
A well-considered plan prevents measuring too much or too little. It ensures the right points are monitored at the right frequency, and that everyone knows what to do when a threshold is exceeded.
